‘SELENA’ THE SERIES NETFLIX!

7th December 2020

Selena, The Series on Netflix, tells the ‘coming of age story,’ of acclaimed and loved Mexican/American musician Selena and the struggles her family went through to make it.

You follow the journey of this young star age 9 singing in the garage at home with her brother and sister while her father is determined to make them become a worldwide success. A musician himself that didn’t reach his full potential you can’t help but think watching this he was forcing his dreams on his whole family. The love of  Latin culture and Tejano music with that American twist is what Selena craved to share.

The series uses underline humour to sugar coat some tougher topics including power, bullying, poverty, identity, prejudice and not being allowed to love who you want. Loyalty to the family ( their dad really) is always at the heart of everything. You feel a lot of love between them watching this Netflix series, which is in its first season. Comparisons to the film made back in the 90’s starring Jennifer Lopez will of course be made. That was the movie that truly defined Lopez as a Hollywood A-lister, she was incredible as ‘Selena’ but the film and this series are slightly different versions of the story. The series does feel much more PG but that approach may be deliberate to attract a wider mainstream audience that may still not be familiar with who Selena is. A new generation that are yet to discover who this woman was and what impact she left in the world as a Latin woman.  Also a focus on the earlier years when she wasn’t the big star she became in her last few years of her life.

Selena was a Latin icon who became one of the first to mix cultures and create a sound adored by millions,  becoming a hero to current stars like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Beyonce and Selena Gomez. She is celebrated even now for her contributions to music and fashion. This series is filmed in Texas and explores her life from age 9 to 20, Selena is searching for her identity, falling in love and experimenting with her style. Expect series 2 to be much darker and delve into the tragic death of the musician. The Grammy winner was shot and killed by the president of her fan club Yolanda Saldívar, who had also become a friend to the starlight. A woman that had been caught embezzling money and being investigated by Selena’s family.  Selena was only 23 when she died and the world was shocked and left her fans heart broken. Fans have given this Netflix series mixed views, mentioning the lead actress being lighter skin toned than the real Selena and the costumes not being accurate.  It’s never going to be perfect when you tell the story of a real person that people adore and feel very connected to. The fact that the series was executive produced by Selena’s own sister Suzette Quintanilla makes it authentic. It stars Christian Serratos as Selena, who you will know from the ‘Walking Dead’, she was determined to take on this role as a fellow Mexican, wanting to show her daughter someone that looked like her in a leading role. Joining her on screen include Gabriel Chavarria as A.B ( Selena’s brother) and Ricardo Antonio Chaviro as Selena’s dad, who is incredible in this. Let us know what you think guys, it’s out now!
