Flip Your Wig

The director/writer of Eddington Ari Aster was joined by Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Michael Ward Austin Butler and Joaquin Phoenix. They came together at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for a press conference that gave thoughtful insights and artistic intention. From Aster’s sharp commentary on the film to Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal’s humour around social media algorithms.
Ari Aster’s latest film, Eddington, premiered in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and made an intense impact. Set in May 2020 in the fictional desert town of Eddington, New Mexico, the film explores the social and psychological unraveling of a community during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The story follows Joe Cross, a defiant local sheriff played by Joaquin Phoenix, who resists lockdown measures and stirs unrest among the town’s population. Pedro Pascal stars as Ted Garcia, the progressive mayor struggling to hold onto power and keep the town from descending into chaos. Emma Stone plays Louise Cross, Joe’s wife, who slowly becomes involved with a conspiracy-fueled cult that exploits the rising fear and paranoia.
The film is a dark, chaotic blend of political Western, psychological thriller, and satire. It dives headfirst into themes of misinformation, political division, and collective delusion, building up to a violent and disturbing climax. Aster doesn’t hold back—Eddington is raw, bloody, and uncomfortably close to reality.
Visually striking and emotionally volatile, the film challenges the viewer to sit with discomfort. While the performances are gripping, especially from Phoenix and Stone, the tone shifts wildly—sometimes to brilliant effect, sometimes less so. It’s a deliberately disorienting portrait of a society on the brink.
Eddington is set for theatrical release on July 18, 2025.
