LAST NIGHT IN SOHO WITH ANYA-TAYLOR JOY!

25th May 2021

‘Last Night in Soho’ starring Anya-Taylor Joy is a horror-thriller following an aspiring fashion designer said to be able to ‘mysteriously’ enter the 1960s where she can encounter her idol – at the time, a wannabe-singer – at a time when London is very dark and different to what we know it to be. The biggest kick here is that the film has a time travelling aspect to it, and Sandy’s way of alternating the reality will have dire consequences.

The man behind the film Edgar Wright has managed to build himself a cult following way before achieving mainstream success, so by now, any new project of his generates an insane amount of buzz. It’s no different now, with ‘Last Night in Soho’ – except that this time, the lack of any real details about the movie are the additional x-factor in building up the hype.

Wright had achieved mainstream success with pastiche – Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007) put not just him, but also Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on the map. For the longest time, though, it also made people unsure of him – some believing he is a creative, forward-thinking filmmaker and others believing that he could be a bit of a joke, almost. The imaginative ‘Scott Pilgrim vs the World’ is now a cult classic, but at the time – as warmly as it was received – it did not quite break the internet. Further collaboration with Pegg and Frost on the last of the seemingly unrelated “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy”, ‘The World’s End’ (2013) had almost cemented his place as a mockery-comedy filmmaker, up until ‘Baby Driver’ (2017) scored three Academy Award nominations.

Taylor-Joy herself is now having the time of her life. Post unsettling ‘ The Witch’ (2015) and ‘Split’ (2016), she became the next ‘It-girl’ – establishing herself as an all-round actress with her turns in shows like ‘The Dark Crystals: Age of Resistance’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’. Now, not only is she headlining Wright’s newest flick – she is also set to appear in Marvel/Fox’s ‘New Mutants’ (2020) – a horror set in X-Men Universe – and ‘Northman’ from Robert Eggers (creator of ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Lighthouse’. On top of that, early reports suggest she will portray titular ‘Furiosa’ in George Miller’s awaited ‘Mad Max’ prequel (previously played by Charlize Theron). Talk about someone to keep an eye on!

The film also has a great supporting cast that includes Matt Smith, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, Michael Ajao and Diana Rigg, Wright is known for his versatility, juggling between genres. He made a horror comedy, a noir comedy, a quirky superhero take and an action flick that was heavily-reliant on its amazing soundtrack. No wonder that his step into a darker realm of horror, containing elements of sci-fi, are drawing so much attention. ‘Last Night in Soho’, once again, is Wright’s way of evolving, taking a new path yet again and we find it quite thrilling to be thrilled, catch it on the big screen on the 29th October 2021!
