‘HURACÁN’ packed with heart and action!

28th October 2020

Written, produced, and directed by Cassius Corrigan, HURACÁN highlights this new filmmakers vision to tell a different much needed story in the most honest authentic way about the city he grew up in Miami.

HURACÁN puts us right in the middle of the cage, in the heart of the action, as we experience the gladiatorial fights, awash with blood and sweat.

For the brutal world of Mixed Martial Arts fighting, only the toughest (both physically and mentally) survive. HURACÁN follows Alonso Santos (Cassius Corrigan) as he struggles to make it as a professional in the MMA sphere. As he lands punches and kicks inside the ring, outside he too battles – trying to overcome his Dissociative Identity Disorder which manifests itself in his fearsomely aggressive alternate personality, Huracán. With help from his therapist, Isabella, played by Yara Martinez (True Detective, Jane The Virgin), Alonso prepares for the biggest fight of his life, knowing he must master himself before he can defeat his opponent.

Sports like martial arts, boxing, and American football have been considered as these manly forms of letting off the steam, healthy outlets for aggression for warriors and gladiator-like athletes of today. Stereotypically, you had to show your strength, you had prove you are made of rock – tougher than your opponent, unfazed by anything, ready to go to battle. ‘Huracan’ – directed, written by and starring a mixed-martial artist, Cassius Corrigan – is a new movie showing you the other side of the coin. The film follows a young, troubled fighter Alonso who suffers from  Multiple Personality Disorder while attempting to get his life together, succeed in the octagon and stay sane.

Mental illness is an uncomfortable topic for a lot of us and despite our best efforts to encourage people to speak out, still – many do not feel comfortable enough to seek help from friends, family or professionals. For athletes, who are presented as these superior humans conditioned to win at all cost and never show weakness, it has long been a difficult, almost shameful topic because of the stigma around it and the image that they are meant to be representing. Imagine what it’s like to not only be unable to fully trust your mind, but also feel forced to keep it inside of you while also getting repeated blows to the head, the body, going through concussions to your brain that is already unhealthy enough without it? This is what ‘Huracan’ is touching on – the uncomfortable topic of being vulnerable within at the same time as being invincible on the outside. Corrigan does what a lot of people are shying away from – he is confronting the stereotypes and trying to break the wall separating the macho culture from its inner fragility and humanity.

Corrigan knows it well enough himself, because MMA is his passion. Sharing name with the great Cassius Clay AKA Muhammad Ali, he is doing his bits for the sport just like his namesake – in Corrigan’s case, ‘Huracan’ should reach a huge audience through HBO and hopefully do a lot of good for athletes on all levels out there in the world.

Side note: It’s okay to not be well regardless of who you are, so for all of you non-athletes who are reading it – speak out. Chat to your friends, your family or try therapy. Do not be afraid or ashamed to see a doctor. And please, watch this film on HBO!

HURACÁN is out now in cinemas across the UK and on HBO Max.
