Euphoria has quickly become a cult classic, mostly because of the unapologetic writing from Sam Levinson. This was his story, a truth that he shared with the world through the eyes of ‘Rue’ a 17 year old recovering drug addict, played by the awesome Zendaya Coleman.
Euphoria has plummeted Zendaya as a serious actress in Hollywood, someone no longer just known as a teen star that kids grew up watching and idolising. She has this Pop-star type of following, whatever she says and wears, her millions of fans emulate and love, but when you dig a little deeper there is this very sensitive side to this young actress who is starting to embrace her power and talent as a black woman in the industry. Her recent Emmys win making her the youngest actress at age 24 to win, against more established names like Jennifer Aniston and Olivia Coleman confirming why Zendaya has so much potential to elevate even more and step into a whole other world with her acting.
Euphoria is the perfect show to challenge and recreate who you can be and the world can see you being on screen. The stories are complicated, hard-hitting and incredibly upsetting. Parents fear this reality, kids taking drugs, getting drunk feeling suicidal, but this is truth… in it’s rawest form. Experiencing stories told in such an intense realistic way can only create more conversations and a new level of understanding of what it truly feels like to be a millennial. The pressure you put on yourself, you get from your peers and society can magnify to such an extent you see nothing but grey. Euphoria is provocative when tackling topics like sexuality. abuse and how dysfunctional relationships can be, but it’s also tender, beautiful and necessary.
The second season had to be put on hold due to the current pandemic but thankfully the Euphoria team found ways to safely film 2 special intimate episodes. The first one-hour episode ‘Trouble Don’t Always Last’, is out now on HBO and Sky Atlantic now, with the second one due soon.
