OSCARS NOMINATIONS DIVERSE AND PACKED WITH TALENTED BRITS!

15th March 2021

It’s officially Oscars season and this year’s nominees have just been announced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. The winners will be revealed on 24th April mostly virtually as we are all still in this pandemic time.

Leading with 10 nominations is critics favourite ‘Mank’ made by David Fincher, while ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’, ‘The Father’, ‘Minari’, ‘Nomadland’, ‘Sound of Metal’, and ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’ are closely behind.
Congrats to both Emerald Fennell and Chloe Zhao who are both nominated for Best Director, nice to see women in the main category for a change. Nominations also in the animation films for ‘Soul’ ‘Wolfwalkers’ and ‘Onward.

British stars are having a great season with Carey Mulligan, Olivia Coleman, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Kaluuya, Riz Ahmed, Vanessa Kirby, Gary Oldman and Sasha Baron Cohen all up for gongs. As always there are a few fall outs mostly the fact that Spike Lee didn’t get a Director nod and none of his outstanding cast either in any of the actor categories, Delroy Lindo truly deserved a nomination for his role in Da 5 Bloods, the guy was incredible to watch. Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah), Regina King (One Night in Miami), George C Wolfe (Ma Rainey) all black directors also not included.

In better news Steven Yeun made history as the first-ever Asian American to be nominated for Best Actor, while both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield are in the Best Supporting Actor category for the same film up against each other. Andra Day is nominated for Best Actress for The United States vs Billie Holiday and although she has tough competition in the form of Viola Davis ( Ma Rainey) and Frances McDormand ( Nomadland) hands down she deserves this award. Andra took on this demanding role of a complicated woman that history has not always told a fair story about, she delved deep, went to dark places and truly  allowed herself to be challenged in away that is both tough and uncomfortable. The result a beautiful, emotional, honest portrayal of a woman that fought so many demons when she was alive.
