Steve McQueen is a busy man. His deal with Amazon and BBC to make five different films about London’s West Indian Community – working as an anthology called ‘Small Axe’ – is a big project made for and about those who are largely underrepresented in the industry. One of these films, ‘Lovers Rock’, had seen the light of day at the LFF and let us tell you now – you have to see it! Starring a new face, Amarah-Jae St Aubyn along with Michael Ward who has been making headlines with ‘Top Boy’ for Netflix and Rapman’s ‘Blue Story’, the film is about love and music. With Caribbean music and culture at it’s heart, the movie is set at a house party, where Martha (St Aubyn) meets Franklyn (Ward) and their love in the difficult ‘80s in London. It is an enchanting and compelling tale that sways you from the get-go and does not stop enthralling till the very end.
A special mention to Kedar Williams-Stirling who truly steals his moments on screen.
