THE WEDDING BANQUET OPENS BFI FLARE FESTIVAL!

21st March 2025

The BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival opened in spectacular fashion with the international premiere of The Wedding Banquet, a reimagining of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 film. The energy at the festival was incredible, and the audience was completely hooked on this fresh take, which blends humor and heart while tackling family expectations, cultural identity, and queer love.

Bowen Yang who is one of the stars in the film and was on hand for the premiere, where I had the chance to chat with him. He spoke about how meaningful it was to bring this story to a new generation, especially in a time when queer and Asian representation in film is more important than ever. We talked about how the film updates the original’s themes for today’s world, touching on issues like chosen family, generational expectations, and the reality of navigating love and identity as a queer person. Seeing the film with an audience that truly felt every moment only reinforced why stories like this matter.

The ensemble cast comprises Bowen Yang as Chris, Lily Gladstone as Lee, Kelly Marie Tran as Angela, Han Gi-chan as Min, Joan Chen as May Chen, and Youn Yuh-jung as Ja-Young.
