Billie Holiday much like Judy Garland was a musical icon, but it’s not so widely known they both suffered from drug and alcohol addiction. Judy was protected at the time due to her white privilege while Billie was a black woman living in a time in America when racism was rife. Your race and class determined the way the police and media treated you, no matter how famous or loved you were.
The film focuses on how the singer’s career was sabotaged after a man she was dating was sent undercover by the Federal Department of Narcotics to expose her.
