‘SHIFTERS’ EXPLORES LOVE & MEMORY! A MUST SEE!
20th August 2024
Shifters at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London is one of the most anticipated productions this season. This play, which had a successful run at the Bush Theatre, features two powerful leads, Tosin Cole and Heather Agyepong, who deliver extraordinary performances as Des and Dre, respectively. The play explores themes of memory, young love, and reconnection, set against a backdrop of rich cultural narratives.
The production has attracted the support of Idris Elba, Little Simz, and Maya Jama, who have joined as producers. Idris Elba, well-known for his impactful roles in Luther and The Wire, praised the writing by Benedict Lombe and the performances, highlighting the privilege of bringing this story to the West End. Little Simz, who was deeply moved by the original run, emphasized the importance of the story and its representation. Maya Jama shared her excitement about seeing the play resonate with audiences, particularly in how it represents and reflects Black experiences on stage.
Their involvement not only brings star power but also underscores the significance of supporting Black British theatre and narratives. In conjunction with the play, there’s also a pop-up bookshop initiative at the theatre, showcasing Black British literature, emphasizing themes of joy, love, and futurism.
Running until October 12, 2024, this production is a must-see!
