Rachel Morrison’s feature debut, The Fire Inside, is set to light up cinema screens starting February 7, following its world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. This marks an exciting milestone for Morrison, who made history as the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for cinematography, thanks to her incredible work on Mudbound. With this new project, she steps into the director’s chair, bringing her unique vision to a story of grit, determination, and triumph.

The film boasts a stellar cast, headlined by Ryan Destiny, known for her standout roles in Star and Grown-ish. Joining her is Academy Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry, celebrated for his performance in Causeway and recognized for a string of impressive credits, including Transformers One, Bullet Train, and Widows. The Fire Inside is based on the incredible true story of Claressa Shields, a trailblazer in the world of boxing and one of the greatest female fighters in history. The film chronicles Shields’ journey as she, with the support of her long-time coach, defies the odds to become the first American woman to win Olympic gold in boxing. But as Claressa soon discovers, achieving her dream is only the beginning—the real battle lies in navigating the challenges that follow, both inside and outside the ring.
