Fresh from its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Andrew Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet is set to dazzle as the opening night gala of the 39th BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival (19–30 March). This vibrant reimagining of Ang Lee’s classic romcom boasts a stellar cast, including Bowen Yang, Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-Chan, Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-Jung.
Join us on Wednesday, 19 March, at BFI Southbank for an unforgettable evening as director Andrew Ahn presents this heartfelt dramedy exploring family, queerness, and cultural identity.
In The Wedding Banquet, Angela and her partner Lee are desperate to fund further IVF treatments. Their friend Min, a closeted heir with expiring visa woes and access to family wealth, proposes a bold solution: a green card marriage with Angela in exchange for financing her IVF. However, their plan spirals into delightful chaos when Min’s formidable grandmother arrives from Korea, demanding an extravagant wedding celebration.
With sharp wit and profound storytelling, Ahn’s latest film delves into the complexities of chosen and biological families, highlighting the intertwined nature of love and forgiveness.
Co-written by Andrew Ahn and James Schamus (co-writer of the original film), The Wedding Banquet is produced by Anita Gou, Joe Pirro, Caroline Clark, and James Schamus.
“Andrew Ahn is a filmmaker we’ve long admired,” said the BFI Flare programming team. “We’re thrilled to have him open the 2025 festival with this joyous celebration of love and community.”
Ahn added, “I’m incredibly excited for The Wedding Banquet to have its international premiere at BFI Flare, a festival that uplifts queer talent. London holds a special place in my heart, and it feels only fitting to bring this love story here.”
