THE HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED EDDIE MURPHY-STARRING SEQUEL TO THE CLASSIC COMEDY WILL LAUNCH GLOBALLY ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO ON MARCH 5, 2021
In the 80s, Eddie Murphy became the undisputed world champion of comedy – his global stardom cemented by the string of successful movies like ’48 Hrs.’, ‘Trading Places’, and the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ trilogy. Naturally, when ‘Coming to America’ was hitting the screens, it was a sure hit before it even opened. Starring Murphy, Arsenio Hall and the great James Earl Jones, the film followed the prince of a fictional African nation – Zamunda – who arrives in the US in search of a woman he will hopefully marry. It was a film that celebrated an all black cast but attracted a mainstream audience, which at that time was very rare.
So, why talk about this film, and not many others that Murphy starred in and sold like hot cakes in cinemas? We could talk about ‘Dr. Doolittle’ or ‘The Nutty Professor’, but …No, ‘Coming to America’ is – and, on top of that whole list. It’s being directed by Craig Brewer who just helmed Murphy’s big comeback last year, ‘Dolemite Is My Name’. Seeing how successful that collaboration was, and how beloved the original ‘Coming to America’ still is, it’s hard not to get excited – and hopeful, too – that the sequel will live up to these extremely high expectations!
‘Coming to America 2’ follows the former Prince of Zamunda, Akeem Joffer (Murphy, naturally reprising his role) who is about to become the new King. What gets in the way of getting ready for this high honour is the fact that Akeem discovers he has fathered a child in America – a Queens-born son he never met, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). As per his dying father’s wish (Earl Jones), Akeem has to groom his son as the crown prince of Zamunda – and to fulfill that wish, Akeem and Semmi (Hall) have to, once again, travel to America… YAY! And if you aren’t excited by this premise – or excited enough, cause it’s impossible not to get psyched! – then you ought to know that Morgan Freeman, Tracy Morgan, Wesley Snipes, Teyana Taylor and Rick Ross are joining the original cast.
