Big Wins at the 2025 Girls On Film Awards

27th January 2025

Last night in London (Sunday, January 26, 2025), the Girls On Film Awards celebrated some incredible achievements in film, with a spotlight on women and marginalized genders in the industry. Held at Curzon Bloomsbury, the ceremony was hosted by Girls On Film co-founders Anna Smith and Hedda Lornie Archbold, with a strong focus on diversity, inclusion, and representation.

The night’s biggest honor went to The Substance, which won Best Feature. Directed by the brilliant Coralie Fargeat, the film captivated audiences with its bold storytelling and unforgettable visuals. Coralie, present to accept the award, was celebrated for her exceptional vision and contribution to filmmaking.

Another standout moment was Black Box Diaries, which won both Best Documentary and the Activist Impact Award, further underscoring the power of storytelling to drive change.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste earned the Best Actress award for her stunning portrayal in Hard Truths, a performance that brought to life the struggle of a woman facing depression. Meanwhile, the Ally Award, sponsored by IMDb, was awarded to director Mike Leigh for his commitment to supporting women’s representation in film.

Anna Smith and Hedda Lornie Archbold shared their thoughts on the awards: “This year’s nominees truly reflect the spirit of sisterhood and the power of film to inspire, inform, and bring people together. We’re honored to celebrate the strength of storytelling in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Substance and Coralie Fargeat’s win tonight is a perfect example of that brilliance.”

They added, “Our nominees and winners show real progress on screen, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate with them at our fourth awards. As one of our community members put it: ‘Girls On Film is more than a podcast—it’s a state of mind.’”
