JAMES GUNN TAKES ON THE SUICIDE SQUAD!

22nd August 2020

When James Gunn says, “It’s going to be different from any superhero movie ever made,” he means it! THE SUICIDE SQUAD, a film by James Gunn will be released in cinemas 2021.

Starring once again Margot Robbie with Idris Elba, Joel Kinnaman, John Cena, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Michael Rooker, Flula Borg, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, Mayling Ng, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Storm Reid, Taika Waititi, Joaquín Cosío, and Juan Diego Botto

When the first ‘Suicide Squad’ came out, the film was trashed by the audiences and critics alike. The only standout and a light at the end of the tunnel was Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, whom everyone had gone crazy about.

The standalone spin-off, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), based on a series of comic books under the same name however received high praise.

In Birds of Prey, one of Gotham’s most powerful and dangerous Crime Lords, Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), puts out a contract on the head of one Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). To protect the girl, and fight for some real girl power, Harley Quinn (Robbie) forms “Birds of Prey” with a group of other badass ladies who also had previous run-ins with Black Mask – Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).

BIRDS OF PREY

Led by an all-female cast (with the exception of the main villain), and directed and written by two women – Kathy Yen (Dead Pigs) and Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), respectively – ‘Birds of Prey’ roll out in cinemas was a huge success last year. Following the commercial success of ‘Suicide Squad’, and the worldwide appeal of Harley Quinn as a character, Margot Robbie spent five years getting Warner to greenlight her own movie. She wanted an R-Rated, twisted comedy and insisted on a female director, having been unhappy with certain elements of her character presented in the initial group outing (uhm, the sexualising costume??). Her belief in this project was so strong that she enlisted her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, to get the movie done. In 2018, she finally got her wish.

Robbie’s company, so far, had only produced a few films, but she strives to bring more diversity to screen and provide herself with roles that maybe she couldn’t otherwise get. This is exactly how her Oscar-nominated performance in ‘I, Tonya’ (2017) came about. Currently on the company’s slate, alongside ‘Birds of Prey’, is also ‘Promising Young Woman’ (2020) – a female empowerment, revenge-driven thriller starring Carey Mulligan, following a young girl on a path to punish men attempting to take advantage of drunk, half-conscious girls. Dunno about you guys, but this sounds like a much-needed film to all of us – and one you also shouldn’t be missing on January 25th. And for bringing stories like this to the big screen, and enabling actresses to portray powerful character, hats off to Margot!

We have to mention the stellar soundtrack which featured some of the hottest women in music right now including Megan Thee Stallion and Normani. Looking forward to the next movie in 2021!
