MAYA HAS BEEN ‘WOKE’ SINCE SHE WAS A KID….
16th May 2018
I have really got into watching documentaries over the last year, some awesome ones out there including ‘Icarus’ ‘Can I Be Me’ ( Whitney story) and ‘Food Choices’ on Netflix.
I would totally love to produce/host my own around interesting topics and people. I have a few ideas up my sleeves, just got to find the time and build a tribe to also bring their talents to the table.
Right so let me tell you a little about ‘MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A’, it’s a film about the musician/activist to most known as M.I.A.
Expect all aspects of her life explored and shared in a ‘up close and very personal’ way. The early days when she was that young innocent girl from Sri Lanka to emigrating to the UK. How she landed into music, fashion and really became this badass woman who kicked some doors down.
The fact that Maya’s long-term friend Steve Loveridge directed the film makes me feel it will be even more candid and incredibly insightful.
She has always been a dope rather cool person that I have found fascinating and so very important to the game. Her style. voice and music has always been so different to the norm, which has always made her intriguing and special. Steve since 2012 has been filming Maya and her life and Maya herself has also documented a ton of footage herself almost in a diary like way.
Maya herslf has said this film will show her real authetic story that in the early days some questioned. Almost like a big ‘F U’ to all her critics.
I feel in a lot of ways her rebellion and outspoken vibe wasn’t totally appreciated by a lot of us early on as we were not ready. We hear this saying ‘I’m Woke’ now in 2018… while Maya was woke over 10 years ago.
The film is out later this year and I would love to grab her for a chat…. Watch this space. By the way I have to mention she had a little launch in Warsaw this week and the outfit I love, Fendi jacket x Norma Kamali leggings this girl has style.
