COULD YOU GO OFFLINE FOR A MONTH???
29th December 2016
Would you take a break from social media?? Like a holiday or even just to spend all that time that we all do on Instagram, Twitter, FaceBook, Snapchat, Pininterest, Blogs and Youtube living your life and spending real quality time with friends and family??
It’s something I have thought about but as I’m building my blog and Youtube channel I always think I need to promote what I’m doing as it’s not just for fun for me… it’s kinda my job now.
I do think though deleting the apps of my phone and scheduling tweets and posts is something I want to start doing more.
Most of my friends are obsessed with social media and spend more time messaging me on DM’s or liking my posts then actually calling me and saying ‘Hi’ in person. If I’m honest I’m not a fan of that and make a conscious effort to check in on them on the phone or via text (is text just as bad)
Gigi Hadid is taking a month of social media in the NY to focus on living her life and enjoying time with her family, Zayn and friends. She also makes a great point that even though she appreciates the millions that follow her and knows it has contributed to her success, she still wants to be able to actually live her life and not make it all about social media.
Gigi explains :
“It’s empowering for everyone because at the end of the day, I’m choosing what I’m showing you. A lot of the world feels so much entitlement in other people’s lives which is crazy, and so new for human beings. You have to realise that I’m going to take a break when I feel like it. If you want to be supportive and still follow me, I’m grateful for that but if you’re going to be negative and dislike the fact I’m going to be human for a month, then I don’t want your follow anyway. It’s empowering for everyone to choose when they’re there or not. It doesn’t have to define out lives. I’m so grateful for social media because it’s given me so much more in my career, but I also respect my career without it. I want to pay most of my attention to my job as a craft and the relationships that are meaningful to me – not because the money or contracts, but because of how I inspire designers and how they inspire me.”
The explore page is insane on Instagram and before I know it I have wasted hours looking at shit that has nothing to do with me or what I’m trying to do. Even if social media is just for fun for you, answer this question when was the last time you picked up the phone or made time for someone you loved properly without liking, sending a DM or posting vids and pics from the night before?
Is that how we communicate with people we love now in 2016? Feels almost lazy like I can’t be bothered to make time for you so I will like your pictures instead.
Also when you are out can you put your phone down and not scroll or check your @’s honestly. Maybe we all need to follow Gigi and take a break from social media, even if it’s just to enjoy that moment with a mate! 2017 is around the corner let’s enjoy it and look forward to it. Making time for those that make me laugh out so loud I start snorting like a pig is at the top of my list!
